Why can files not be written to the My Documents folder by VCADD?

Solution

If you are finding that VCADD cannot save files to the My Documents folder or you get error log messages like "The system cannot find the file specified" for SysSett.vcenv, you are probably running into a feature which was recently introduced into Windows 10 called Controlled Folder Access.  This feature blocks access to several Windows folders, including My Documents.

There are two options.  You can turn Controlled Folder Access off completely, or you can add Visual Cadd (vcadd9.exe) as a trusted application.  The following two links give good explanations on how to do either of those.  For the second option, the normal location for VCADD9 is C:\Program Files (x86)\TriTools Partners\Visual CADD 9\Programs\vcadd9.exe. For other versions of VCADD, use the appropriate executable name.
